Math 53 Fall 2022

Important info

This is the webpage for CJ Dowd's section of Math 53. The instructor of this course is Norman Sheu. His website for the course is here. See also the bCourses page for more material, including lecture notes. Please refer to these pages for the syllabus, course policies, homework assignments, lecture notes, and other general information about the course.

Homework is due Fridays at the beginning of section. Please submit a hard copy of your homework in person at section. Homework is graded Credit/No Credit based on completion. Late homework will not be accepted, but you have 2 no-questions-asked homework drops at your disposal. Use these in case of illness or unforeseen circumstances—or, if you manage to go all semester without dropping a homework, as a reward for a job well done. For accommodations beyond 2 drops, please consult the DSP. To encourage attendance, perfect attendance at section for an entire week (i.e. a consecutive MWF) will grant you a small grade boost (0.5% per perfect week, capping at a total 3% bonus).

If you have homework questions, please come to office hours. If you cannot make my office hours, you are welcome to attend other GSIs' office hours, which are listed on the main course site. (Students from other sections are welcome to attend my office hours too!) For non-homework questions, you can contact me by email and I will attempt to respond within 24 hours, but ideally come to office hours to address these questions as well.

My goal for sections

My sections will be dedicated to building and reinforcing intuition about the topics, and learning how to work smarter, not harder, whenever possible. Section materials will build off of previous sections, so consistent attendance is important. A section will usually involve worksheets with conceptual problems related to recent lecture materials and learning useful tricks/techniques. We may still do a few thematically appropriate computational problems. Please bring scrap paper to do work on, since there's only so much space on the worksheets. We will usually not go over problems for homeworks that have yet to be submitted; come to office hours for that!
