# 2011 Bowen Lectures

The 2011-12 Bowen Lectures will be delivered by Cédric Villani (Université of Lyon and Institut Henri Poincaré) on February 27th, 28th, and 29th, 2012. Each lecture begins at 4:10pm and ends at 5:00pm.

Series Title: **Many Particle Systems and Plasma Physics**

Monday February 27th

Lecture 1: *Overview*

105 Stanley Hall

Abstract:

In
this lecture I shall present some of the basic problems in the
mathematical theory of many-particle systems in classical physics,
including in particular plasma physics.

Tuesday February 28th

Lecture 2: *Landau damping -- problems and results*

105 Stanley Hall

Abstract:

In
this lecture I explain about the physical and mathematical theory of
Landau damping, and the recent progress by Mouhot and myself about
Landau damping in the nonlinear, close-to-equilibrium regime.

Wednesday February 29th

Lecture 3: *Landau damping -- proofs and problems*

1 LeConte Hall

Abstract:

In
this lecture I shall go more deeply into some of the proofs of the
nonlinear Landau damping, and evoke some of the many problems in the
area which have hardly been touched so far.
