Math 32 - Precalculus -- [4 units]

Course Format: Three hours of lecture, two hours of discussion per week.

Prerequisites: Three years of high school mathematics, plus satisfactory score on one of the following: CEEB MAT test, math SAT, or UC/CSU diagnostic examination.

Description: Algebraic operations, real numbers, rectangular coordinates, graphs, equations and inequalities, functions, polynomials, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities, linear systems of equations, roots of polynomial equations.

Textbook: Axler, Precalculus: A Prelude to Calculus.

Outline of the Course:
Chapter 0: The real numbers 4 hours
Chapter 1: Functions and their graphs 6 hours
Chapter 2: Linear, quadratic and rational functions 6 hours
Chapter 3: Exponential functions, logarithms and e 7 hours
Chapter 4: Trigonometric functions 6 hours
Chapter 5: Trigonometric algebra and geometry 6 hours
Review 3 hours
Total 38 hours
Midterms & Holidays 4 hours

Comments: Due to time constraints, the instructor may wish to de-emphasize or eliminate one or more of the less central topics.
