Bill Bade's memorial celebration will take place on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Pacific School of Religion Chapel and the Bade Museum, at 1pm.

Congratulations to sophomore Shiyu Li for placing Honorable Mention in the 2011 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition!  She ranked in the top 50 out of 4,400 students from 572 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada.

The Chancellor's Outstanding Staff Award acknowledges extraordinary achievement. Criteria include the following attributes:

Community Building
Diversity/Inclusion
Innovation
Leadership

The award will be presented at a ceremony on Wednesday, April 18, 2011, 4:00--6:00 in 775 Tan Hall.

Professors Demmel and Holtz's paper, "Minimizing communication in numerical linear algebra," which can be found in the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, 32: 866-901, 2011, is one of two winners of the SIAG/LA best paper competition.

Bill Arveson's Memorial will be held Sunday, February 19, at 2:00 pm, in the Faculty Club on the UC Berkeley campus.

The Math Commencement will be held on Monday, May 14th, 2012, at 2pm in Zellerbach Auditorium.

The Smale Prize recognizes major achievements in furthering the understanding of the connections between mathematics and computation. The award is named after Stephen Smale who contributed greatly to this understanding and many other fields of mathematics as well as being key to the founding of the Society. The prize is awarded to a researcher having received a doctoral degree within the 10 years prior to the award.
