Accessibility Resources for Instructors
The Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act require that universities have procedures to ensure disabled students have equal access to educational programs. UCOP's PACAOS 140 policy (Policy on Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability) section 143.36 requires that each campus create written procedures for providing academic adjustments (also called accommodations) and resolving disputes involving them.
Classroom Accommodations
The Disabled Students' Program (DSP) is the entity tasked with executing this mandate on our campus. DSP manages for instructors the first several steps of the legally required 'interactive process'- the process by which a disabled person requests accommodations and, together with the institution, determines what is reasonable and appropriate.
| Accomodation | Description and Process |
|---|---|
| Accommodations for disabled students in the classroom | DSP manages: (a)hosting the online portal through which disabled students first submit requests for accommodations;(b)receiving and reviewing the required supporting medical documentation; (c)meeting with the student and negotiating to create a set of reasonable accommodations, and; (d)preparing a Letter of Accommodation (LOA) documenting the outcome, and providing it to the instructor. |

Roles and Responsibilities
The successful and timely provision of academic accommodations requires the engagement and cooperation of many people across campus. Each have specific knowledge and expertise regarding the interactive process. Academic Accommodations: Roles and Responsibilities.
