Honors Program

In addition to completing the requirements for the major in mathematics or applied mathematics, students in the honors program must: (a) earn a GPA of at least 3.5 in upper division and graduate courses in the major and at least 3.3 in all courses taken at the University; (b) complete either Math 196, in which they will write a senior honors thesis, or pass two graduate mathematics courses with a grade of at least A-; (c) receive the recommendation of the Head Major Advisor. Students interested in the honors program should consult with the Honors Program Advisor early in their program, preferably by their junior year.

 

Please note that the requirements for graduating with honors in Math and Applied Math in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 have been adjusted as follows:

In addition to completing the requirements for the major in mathematics or applied mathematics, students in the Honors Program must:

(a) earn a GPA of at least 3.5 in upper division and graduate courses in the major and at least 3.3 in all courses taken at the University
(b) complete one of the following:

  • Math 196 (senior honors thesis)
  • At least 2 graduate classes with grades of A- or higher in each
  • At least 1 graduate class with an A- or higher plus 1 graduate class with a Pass grade if that "P" grade is earned in Spring 2020, Fall 2020, or Spring 2021

(c) receive the recommendation of the Head Major Advisor [Note: This is not required in most cases and is only needed if there is some ambiguity in the completion of requirements (a) through (b).
