Congratulations to Dr. Kelli Talaska and Dr. Alexander Paulin for receiving UC Berkeley’s Extraordinary Teaching in Extraordinary Times Award

April 23, 2021

The award, established in 2020 by The Academic Senate’s Committee on Teaching, is presented to UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and student instructors in recognition of the embraced challenges posed by COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and engaged in or supported excellent teaching. These instructors and staff used innovative methods and worked beyond their traditional roles to ensure that students remained engaged and supported, and were challenged to do meaningful work under extraordinary circumstances.

[Dr. Talaska and Dr. Paulin have] developed a new program called Pre-Calculus Essentials. It serves both as an extensive online mathematical resource, available to all UC Berkeley community members, and the foundation for a summer program to better prepare incoming undergraduates. This summer program also has a strong focus on helping students build community and resilience, and we’ve worked to incorporate these principles into our academic year mathematics courses.
