Grading: The final examination will take place onWEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2015, 7-10 PM. The final examination will count for 50% of the course grade. There will be no early or make-up final examination. There will be two midterm examinations, which will each count for 20% of the course grade. Make-up midterm exams will not be given; instead, if you tell me ahead of time that you must miss a midterm exam, then the final exam and the other midterm exam will count more to make up for it. If you miss a midterm exam but do not tell me ahead of time, then you will need to bring me a doctor's note or equivalent in order to have the final exam and the other midterm exam count more to make up for it. If you miss both midterm exams the circumstances will need to be truly extraordinary to avoid a score of 0 on at least one of them.

Homework: Homework will be assigned at nearly every class meeting, but will be due once per week. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss the homework and the course content with each other, but each student should write up their own solutions, reflecting their own understanding, to turn in. Homework wil count for 10% of the course grade.

Comments: Students who need special accommodation for examinations should bring me the appropriate paperwork, and must tell me at least a week in advance of each examination what specific accommodation they need for that exam, so that I and the department will have enough time to arrange it.

Syllabus:

The main point of this course is to study functions from the complex plane (or open subsets of it) to itself, specially differentiable functions. As it turns out this notion which is familiar from calculus -when we deal with functions from the real line to itself- has now unexpected consequences: for instance being once differentiable makes you infinitely differentiable.

This subtle change makes the theory of functions of a complex variable into an extremely powerful tool in all areas of mathematics: geometry, number theory, analysis and all sort of physical applications, etc.
I expect students to become active participants in class, and I encourage everyone to take a look at the book before coming to lecture. I will prepare a detailed syllabus that will make clear what section of the book we will cover on any given day.

Prerequisites: For this class, I assume you have an intermediate background in proof-writing and solving mathematical problems. One way would be to have taken Math 55, but ideally you also would have taken or are co-taking something like Math 113 or 104. Experience in high school mathematics competitions which involve proof-writing would be another way. If you are somewhat behind on these prerequisites but are willing to learn quickly and put in some hours, you will do fine.

Syllabus:

Historically, this is the Putnam Workshop, which seeks to prepare students for the Putnam Mathematical Competition. This particular incarnation will treat the Putnam as a means and not an end. The focus will be on improving domain-general problem-solving ability through using the Putnam as case study. The material will come from a variety of sources, including the Putnam itself, high-school math Olympiads (which are usually more intricate!), tech interview questions, etc.

The students are expected to take part in the real Putnam Exam.

Recommended Reading: A Course in Functional Analysis, John B. Conway, 2nd ed., Springer-Verlag.

My understanding is that through an agreement between UC and Springer, chapters of the first edition of this book are available for free download by students. They should be satisfactory - I do not plan to assign exercises from the Conway book.

Course description:

The theory of Banach algebras is a very elegant blend of algebra and topology which provides unifying principles for a number of different parts of mathematics and its applications, notably operator theory, commutative and non-commutative harmonic analysis and the theory of group representations, and the theory of functions of one and several complex variables. But at the present time probably its most extensive use is as a foundation for non-commutative measure theory (von Neumann algebras, Math 209) and non-commutative topology and geometry (C*-algebras, Math 208). These in turn provide a foundation for quantum physics, but they also have myriad applications in many other directions, including group representations and harmonic analysis, ordinary topology and geometry, and even number theory. (For a vast panorama of the applications see Alain Connes' 1994 book "Noncommutative Geometry", which is available on the web as a free download.) I will cover the standard topics as listed in the catalog. Beyond the basic general theory of Banach algebras this will include several forms of the spectral theorem for self-adjoint operators on Hilbert space, compact and Fredholm operators, and group algebras and the Fourier transform and their relation to representation theory. Further topics as time permits, probably including Toeplitz operators and their index. The problem sets will involve a number of important specific examples beyond those presented in class.

Homework: Many weeks I will give out a problem set, and the course grade will be based on the work done on these. There will be no final examination.

Literature: M. P. do Carmo, Riemannian geometry (required)
P. Petersen, Riemannian geometry (required), available in hardcopy or online through SpringerLink
S. Sakai, Riemannian geometry (recommended)
J. Cheeger, D. Ebin, Comparison theorems in Riemannian geometry (recommended)

In the first half of the class we will mainly use do Carmo's book, although Petersen's book can be read as well. Later we will talk about a selection of topics that can be found in Petersen's book or in Cheeger and Ebin's book. Each week, I will announce which chapters of which book we are going to talk about. It is recommended that the students read this chapters to review the material from class.

Grading: The grade will be determined by the overall score on the problem sets (60%) and by a 20-30min talk that will be given by each student during reading week (40%).

Problem Sets: Problem sets will be published weekly and are due in class by the specified date. Only 1-2 problems per problem set will be graded. I will often just refer to certain problems in do Carmo or Petersen. So it is helpful to have access to these textbooks. Problem sets are available on https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h6vp3xx97x5vxpr/AAD4mu2SGgLfiT9kXlFMTvuma?dl=0

Syllabus: Hamiltonian systems appear in conservative problems in mechanics as in celestial mechanics but also in the statistical mechanics governing the motion of atoms and molecules in matter. The discoveries of last century have opened up new perspectives for the old field of Hamiltonian systems and let to the formation of the new field of symplectic geometry. In the course, I will give a detailed acount of some basic methods and results in symplectic geometry and its application to physics and other fields of mathematics.
Here is an outline of the course:

1. Sympletic linear algebra. Quadratic Hamiltonians.
2. Symplectic and Contact manifolds, cotangent bundles. Darboux's theorem.
3. Variational problems and Minimax principle. Hofer-Zehnder Capacity and Hofer Geometry.
4. Weinstein's conjecture, Viterbo's theorem. Gromov-Eliashberg $C^0$-rigidity.
5. Holomorphic Curves and Gromov's Symplectic Width.

Prerequisite: The equivalent of one of Math H113, or 114, or 250A, or consent of the instructor. (250A may be taken simultaneously.)

Syllabus: The theme of Math 245A, as I teach it, is universal constructions. We begin with a well known case, free groups, which we will construct in three quite different ways, and show why these constructions come to the same thing. We then examine a smorgasbord of other important universal constructions, noting similarities, differences, and general patterns.
After that, we settle down to developing the tools needed to study the subject in a unified way: Ordered sets and the axiom of choice, closure operators, category theory, and the general concept of a variety of algebras. (We in fact treat most of these, not merely as means to this goal, but as interesting landscapes worth lingering over.) We find that the free group construction is a particular example of an adjoint functor (it is left adjoint to the underlying-set functor on groups), and eventually develop a magnificent result of Peter Freyd, characterizing those functors between varieties of algebras that have left adjoints. We determine, in several cases, all such functors.

Recommended Reading: None (but some texts useful for various purposes are listed in section 1.6).

Homework and Grading: The text contains more interesting exercises than anyone could do. I will ask you to think briefly about each exercise, and select a few to hand in each week; more details at the first class meeting. Grades will be based mainly on this homework. Students wishing a reduced homework-load can enroll S/U.

Comments: My philosophy is that it does not make sense to spend the classroom time using the instructor and students as an animated copying machine. Rather, the material that is typically delivered in a lecture should be put in duplicated notes which the students study, and class time should be devoted to the more human activities of discussing and clarifying the material, introducing some topics by the Socratic method, etc.. Such notes for Math 245, begun in Fall 1971 and reworked each time I have taught the course, have developed into the text we will use.
There are difficulties with this way of teaching if a textbook leaves out motivation, examples, etc., that might be included in a lecture; but I have made it a point to include these in the notes. Another problem is that doing the reading before class runs counter to the habits many students have acquired. To get around this, I require each student to submit, on each class day, a question about the day's reading, if possible by e-mail at least an hour before class, so that I can prepare to address some of these questions in class.

Syllabus:

Title: On singularity formation in nonlinear PDE’s: a constructive approach.

This course will be an introduction to the problem of singularity formation in nonlinear evolution equations, both dispersive and parabolic, which has seen spectacular developments for the past ten years. We will start with reviewing some of the basis concepts in the field (local well posedness, global existence, scattering and blow up) and in particular the role of solitary waves in the qualitative description of the flow. We will then introduce some of the basic tools for the construction of blow up solutions. We will in particular detail the construction of minimal blow up elements and explain their role in describing the flow near solitary waves. This will give us the first keys to understand the differences between type I and type II blow up which we will illustrate on various problems, We will for example give partial answers to a very simple question: how fast do ice balls melt? Time permitting, we will conclude the class towards energy super critical models.
The course will be completely self contained with the prior knowledge of basis functional analysis (Hilbert and Banach spaces), PDE’s (well posedness, energy estimates) and dynamical systems (perturbation theory), and will start with a crash course on the Sobolev H^s(\R^d) space and its embedding properties.
