Course policies

Email policy: You may email me at any time requesting extra office hours if you cannot make my scheduled office hours. If you email me with specific homework questions however, I cannot promise that I will respond to it with a solution or a detailed mathematical explanation.

Attendance: While attendance does not officially count towards the grade, the GSI's and the instructor have agreed that if there is an edge case student when we are deciding the grade cutoffs, we may modify the cutoffs to bump up the grade of a student who has really put the effort in all semester. This of course will also bump up the grade of anyone with the same grade as this student. I will pass around an attendance sheet during each section in order to keep track of students' participation.

Quizzes: There will be a quiz in section consisting of two problems from the homework on each Wednesday after the first Wednesday.

Grading: 20% quizzes (based on homework), 20% for each midterm, 40% final.

Other concerns: If you are in need of special assistance or have a disability which requires special care in the case of an emergency in the building, please let me know by email at the start of term.

Tips: Mathematics, even moreso than other subjects, takes time and repetition to sink in. You may not understand a concept at first, but the longer you work with it the more sense it will make, until one day, without knowing exactly when, it all becomes clear.

Spending time up front to learn the material is essential for getting the most out of this course. Start early on assignments! Come to office hours as soon as you feel you are falling behind, rather than waiting until the end of the semester to try to cram for the final exam.
