Departments

MUSA officers work hard to provide the math community with a variety of events. Here are some of our departments.

Outreach & Diversity

MUSA's outreach and diversity team is responsible for holding events that not only improve the quality of life for undergraduates here in the math department, but also prospective students and math enthusiasts in the general public.

They organize BUMP, our mentoring program, semesterly Town Halls on the state of the math department, and regular career- and diversity-related panels.

Most notably, every spring MUSA holds Shadow a Math Major Day for prospective freshmen. Outreach officers also are in charge of BUMP, the math department's mentoring program.

Social

We want to break the ice among the mathematics community, so we frequently hold fun events, including board game nights, pub trivia, student-faculty dinner, and pancake charades (you'll just have to stop by and find out). Free snacks (and sometimes dinner!) are provided, so stop by and make some friends.

Most of our social events are held on Thursday evenings from 6:30–8pm, in 1015 Evans! We're looking forward to seeing you there.

If you don't like going outside, you can also socialize with us online on our Discord!

Professional

Professional officers work with companies and industry professionals to support MUSA members as they work towards opportunities in their future after college. They run a professional panel every semester, which includes inviting various industry professionals in differing fields to talk about math career exploration, as well as what a day-to-day working in industry may look like. Topics in this panel can range from career advice and dealing with imposter syndrome to how to network and get referrals. They also run a career panel, in which we invite a representative from the Career Center to come speak to math students about the related career services they offer, as well as general career paths.

Besides the panels, professional officers also keep the professional opportunities document updated, and send sponsorship proposals to companies. Our sponsors help fund many of our Thursday social events!

Finance

Finance officers manage MUSA money and promise not to commit fraud.

More seriously, they do a lot of behind-the-scenes tasks working with ASUC, managing our bank accounts, and handling our merch orders. We're very grateful for the hard work they put in.

Academic

Our academic officers are responsible for organizing Math Mondays, which are weekly talks given by professors on topics they are interested in.

You can find out more on our academic page!

Publicity

Publicity officers advertise all MUSA events, make graphics and flyers, and are in charge of photography.

They make beautiful graphics and posters for Math Mondays and Thursday socials, run our Instagram, help us publicize on Ed, manage classroom announcements to spread awareness of MUSA, and keep our linktree up to date.
