Office Hours
Mondays 5-6 (in 381T), Wednesdays 3-4 (in 381K).
Syllabus
Our focus is going to be entirely on working problems from the "Brian Conrad Era" (2009-present) of the algebra qualifying exams.
I will only draw from problems in the exams before 2017, leaving the post-2017 questions untainted for full-length practice tests.
- Week 1: Linear algebra (1/18).
- Week 2: Finite group theory (1/25)
- Problems for discussion, collected together in one file.
- Dan Litt's notes on finite linear groups.
- Extra problems for practice: Spring 2010 M1, Spring 2012 A10, Fall 2013 M2, Spring 2014 A5, Fall 2014 A1, Fall 2015 M1,
Spring 2016 M1, Spring 2016 A3, Fall 2016 M1.
- Hints/Solutions.
- Week 3: Fields and Galois theory (2/15)
Week 4: Ring theory (2/22)
Week 5: Modules and homological algebra (3/1)
Week 6: Commutative algebra (3/8)
Week 7: Representation theory (3/15)
-

one file.
- Extra problems for practice: 2012 Fall A9, 2014 Fall B3, 2014 Spring M1, 2015 Spring Q1, 2015 Spring A4, 2015 Fall Q9,
Fall 2016 A7
Hints/Solutions.
Week 8: Algebraic geometry (3/22)
I will suggest weekly problems for "homework" from the list of past exams, which you can find
here. In "class" we'll go over (some of) the solutions.
Homework
I will ask people to write up some problems each week, to make sure everybody is keeping up. (I will probably not do more than skim the writeups.) There will be no grades.
