that's me Hello! I am Alexander Givental.
I work at the mathematics department of UC Berkeley.
My e-mail address is: givental@math.berkeley.edu

My career as a mathematician began when I was in middle school and first tried to solve challenging math problems. This way I learned that mathematics is a deep and beautiful science. Here I will try to share with you my love for this subject.
To make problem solving more attractive, I decided to organize it in the form of a take-home contest.

Rules

Every two weeks I will post to this web-page two new problems and my solutions to the previous two problems. Please e-mail me your solutions before the end of the two-week period, and I will e-mail you my comments after the end of the period. In the end of the semester several best problem solvers will be awarded valuable prizes - books!
Room of Glory     Room of Gossip

Enjoy the process

Please remember that the contest is not a test that you can fail but a challenge that you can meet. In principle it is similar to genuine mathematical research. The main difference is that solving a contest problem may require from several hours to several days of thinking while solving a research problem may take months or even years. Even when we don't solve a problem, we can learn a lot from the process, and learn to enjoy it.

Our contest is currently closed and replaced with the Virtual Math Circle .
The awards and the winners have been announced at the Hanukkah celebration on 12/14/04.
