Manipulating individual molecules

Hari Manoharan and his student Chris Moon let me manipulate individual carbon monoxide molecules sitting on a copper plate. The results are shown below. Since this is almost unbelievable I asked them to sign the "before and after" pictures!

This is all amazing in view of the following statement made by Erwin Schrödinger only 55 years ago: "We never experiment with just one electron or atom or (small) molecule. In thought-experiments we sometimes assume that we do; this invariably entails ridiculous consequences... we are not experimenting with single particles, any more than we can raise Ichthyosauria in the zoo" [Brit. J. Phil. Sci. 3, 233 (1952)]. Still, I am not giving up on the study of his great equation.
