Math 53, Fall 2025

This is the course page for Zack's sections, 104 (MWF at 9 a.m. in Haviland 12) and 106 (MWF at 10 a.m. in Dwinelle 229). Our first meeting is on 9/3.

My office hours are Mondays from 12 to 2 p.m. in Evans 1087, which begin on 9/15.

Attendance at section is not required, but I hope you’ll find it helpful and choose to join when you can!

Announcements

We will not have section on Wednesday 12/3. Instead, I will hold office hours at a time TBA during reading week.
There will not be a sixth quiz.
The same Google drive now has some Final review materials. In addition to the same TBP and department links from before, consider looking at the S'21 guide and its solutions. Keep in mind that different instructors can have different preferred question types.
The same Google drive now has some Midterm 2 review materials. In addition to the same TBP and department links from before, consider looking at the S'21 guide and these midterm review problems from F'21. Again, keep in mind that course pace can vary year by year.
Instead of my regular office hours on 10/27, I will hold office hours on 10/30 from 10 a.m. to noon in Evans 1087.
By request, here are counterexamples to generalizations that one might hope for two theorems that we have encountered so far in the class: Clairaut's theorem and Fubini's theorem. Note that the functions are extremely similar to each other, as well as to functions that have given us other odd behaviors!

Note that the scope should end this time at §14.7 (last year, for instance, it ended at §14.4).
My office hours on Monday 9/22 will shift to 1 to 3 p.m., still in Evans 1087.
I will be out of town the week 9/8–12. Sections (and the quiz) will be held as usual by a substitute.

Quizzes

Currently planned quiz dates: 9/10, 9/24, 10/15, 10/29, 11/19. Since quizzes are on Wednesdays, the lecture from the preceding Thursday will be the latest course content which will be fair game. Past quizzes with solutions will appear here after they have been fully administered.

Worksheets

We will have a worksheet for each section with some problems (we may not solve every problem in section). However, you are welcome and encouraged to ask other questions about course material and I will do my best to clear anything up. Past worksheets with solutions will appear here.

Homework

Homework is due on Gradescope at 8 am on Mondays. If you miss this deadline, I will accept late submissions by email up to 24 hours past the deadline, with a late penalty.
