This a very early stage of the project to make GNU Unifont into a nice scalable font appropriate for console usage. The variant supplied above is monospaced; it is accepted by Windows console (as well as it may be used by any TrueType capable application).

For combining characters, it uses the same strategy as the DejaVu Sans Mono: they are monospaced, but use OpenType instructions to behave as if they were 0-width (in OpenType applications - do not know how to test this...). All the characters available in GNU Unifont are supplied, with the following omissions: U+0000 and U+0001 (so far they conflict with .notdef glyph), and Han/Hangul characters (not suitable for 16x8 cell except for couple of dozens which do fit in a narrow box - and we include them).

As a result, all Unicode 5.1 BMP characters (except Han/Hangul) are available. In addition, I added subscript Latin letters (up to Unicode 6.2). The total is 14021 character (and .notdef).

Instructions for installation of fonts into Windows console are available as one of the sections here (look for console font). The gist is:

  reg export "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont" console-ttf.reg
  copy console-ttf.reg console-ttf-new.reg
  ##	Edit console-ttf-new.reg
  reg import console-ttf-new.reg
For this version of the file, the Family Name to use is
 GNU Unifont mono
