I will discuss the geometry of degenerating families of compact negative Kahler-Einstein surfaces. First I will prove the existence of a family of negative Kahler-Einstein spaces that interpolate between different limiting geometries of such metrics. Then I will argue that this family gives a model for a large class of degenerations.
