Molien's theorem, a seemingly obscure algebraic result about the invariants of finite groups acting on polynomial rings, turns out to have an amazing number of interesting applications. We'll investigate some special cases and show how it can be used to solve (and generalize!) an elementary summation problem that was proposed in the American Mathematical Monthly in 1973.
