El Nino and other oscillations in the climate system

El Nino and La Nina are the warm and cold phases of a natural oscillation (the "Southern Oscillation") of the atmosphere-ocean system in the tropical Pacific. The Southern Oscillation has an irregular period, on average 2-7 years. The dynamics of the Southern Oscillation and its teleconnection to weather worldwide are reviewed. Relationships between El Ninos and decadal oscillations in the North Atlantic and North Pacific are discussed.
