Dynkin diagrams
The Dynkin diagrams A-D-E come up in many different parts of mathematics. We start by discussing how they appear as answers to elementary questions. Often their occurrence in central results can be explained through elementary considerations, and we illustrate through examples from algebra how and why these diagrams appear.
