History of the Berkeley Mathematics Department

I will discuss the origins, development and evolution of the Mathematics Department from the founding of the University in the 1860s through the 1940s. The story has some fascinating twists and turns that are connected in interesting ways with the political climate and political turbulence in California and the development of American Mathematics as well as the evolution of American higher education during this period. From its beginning in 1869 to 1949, the Department had only four Chairs, and the story will involve centrally these four individuals.
