that's me Hello! I am Alexander Givental.
I work at the mathematics department of UC Berkeley.
My e-mail address is: givental@math.berkeley.edu

"Math circles" came to the US from eastern Europe where they have been a very popular form of extra-curricular math education. Once a week a group of interested students would come together to tackle challenging math problems under the guidance of a more experienced instructor. To find out more about "math circles" visit the Berkeley Math Circle web-page.

Our Fall-2004 experience with the web-based Tehiyah Math Contest suggests a re-organization. Instead of a competition, we are now going to try a virtual math circle. In other words, you will attack my problems together rather than alone, and I will mediate and guide your attack using e-mail and the web.

Rules

I will post to this web-page some problems for you to solve. Please e-mail me your ideas how to approach the problems. I will publish your suggestions with my comments in the Mail Room and expect further ideas from you or from other participants, as if we were discussing the problems in class. When a solution to the problem is found, I will add it to our collection of Previous Problems and Solutions and propose a new problem.
