Math 113 (Introduction to Abstract Algebra)
Course structure
- This course will be held online using bCourses, Zoom, and Piazza.
- Zoom: There is a recurring Zoom meeting for our class, scheduled from 8-10AM MTWTh. If you are enrolled in the class, you should recieve an email from me with the Zoom meeting ID and password, which will also be posted on bCourses.
- Lectures: I will be recording lectures using Zoom. They will be posted on bCourses on Monday and Wednesday nights.
- Our official lecture time is TTh 8-9:30. I encourage you to watch the lectures at these times, during which I will be in the Zoom meeting to talk with you and answer your questions.
In the Zoom meeting you can unmute whenever you like and ask a question. You can also ask questions in the chat, either publically or privately. - Office hours: I will be holding virtual office hours on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-10 (in the Zoom meeting). I am also happy to meet with you by appointment.
- GSI: The GSI for all sections of math 113 is Max Wimberley, who will be holding office hours MWF 9-10 and 1-2 in Zoom. See bCourses for the meeting ID and password.
- Piazza: We have a Piazza page for the class. Use this to ask and answer questions. See your email or bCourses for the link to sign up.
Homework and tests
- Homework: Homework will be assigned weekly. Assignments and solutions will be posted below, as well as in BCourses. You should turn in you assignments via bCourses. Assignments may be typed using LaTeX, or handwritten and scanned.
- Exams: There will be two midterms and one final exam. They will be "take-home" (ie. stay at home) format and are open book + open notes. You will have one week to do each test. Information on grading can be found in the syllabus above.
Resources
- Here is our syllabus.
- Our textbook is ''Abstract Algebra" (Third edition) by Dummit and Foote.
- There is an electronic library copy avaliable HERE.
For information about off campus access, see HERE.
CAUTION: This is the 2nd edition, not the 3rd. I am assigning exercises out of the 3rd edition, so if you use the above link be warned that you may not see the same numbered exercises.
I have checked that for homework 1 the assigned problems in both editions agree.
I have been told that the library is in the process of digitizing the 3rd edition, and I will update the above link when it is available.
