Prerequisites: Hilbert spaces and the spectral theorem for normal operators (Math 206).
Syllabus:
The course will have two parts:

I) basics of von Neumann algebra theory.

II) an introduction to free probability.

In the basics of von Neumann algebra theory the emphasis will be on II_1 factors. These can be viewed as describing geometries of linear subspaces having dimensions numbers in the interval [0.1].

In the free probability part, special attention will be given to applications to random matrices in the large N limit and to the II_1 factors of free groups.
Grading: Grades based on class attendance, participation to problem discussions in class and homework.
