Syllabus: Divisibility, congruences, numerical functions, theory of primes. Topics selected: Diophantine analysis, continued fractions, partitions, quadratic fields, asymptotic distributions, additive problems.

Midterm exams: Exams will be given in class on September 20 and October 25.  Please do not plan to travel on those dates.

Office: 885 Evans Hall

Office Hours: To be announced

Required Text: An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers, Fifth Edition by Ivan Niven, H. S. Zuckerman and Hugh L. Montgomery.

Recommended Reading: If you get frustrated with the textbook, you might want to consult an old web page that lists alternative references.  Just ask me and I'll supply a few more ideas.

Grading: I will use the time-honored grading scheme that computes letter grades from a composite grade in which homework counts for 20%, the midterms count for 15% each and the final exam counts for 50%.

Homework: Assigned weekly.  Assignments will carry equal weight and each student's lowest score will be dropped.

Course Webpage: http://math.berkeley.edu/~ribet/115/ . The course will be updated before the beginning of the fall, 2012 semester.
