Creating New CalMail Math Account

  • Start Thunderbird application
  • Select Account Settings from Edit menu
  • Click on Add Account button in the Account Settings dialog window

Running Account Wizard

Please replace username with your current Math login name in the below configuration settings.

  • Click on Email account radio button, then on Next button in the Account wizard dialog window
  • Type your full name in the Your Name text field and username@math.berkeley.edu in the Email Address field, then click on Next button
  • Click on IMAP radio button, type calmail.berkeley.edu in the Incoming Server text field, then click on Next button
  • Type username@math.berkeley.edu in both Incoming User Name and Outgoing User Name text fields, then click on Next button
  • Type CalMail Math in the Account Name text field, then click on Next button
  • Review the summary of account settings, then click on Finish button

Note: If you are already using Thunderbird, then the outgoing SMTP server name shown in the summary is probably mail.math.berkeley.edu. It will stop working after the conversion. The correct settings for outgoing server are discussed in the steps below.

Setting up Incoming IMAP Server

  • Select newly created account CalMail Math on the left side of the Account Settings dialog window and click on Server Settings
  • Make sure that Server Name is calmail.berkeley.edu, Port is 143, and User Name is username@math.berkeley.edu.
  • Click on TLS radio button (this is important security setting)
  • Click on Check for new messages at start up and Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit check boxes.

Adding a New Outgoing SMTP Server

  • Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left side of the Account Settings dialog window and click on Add button
  • Type CalMail Math in the Description text field of the SMTP Server dialog window
  • Type calmail.berkeley.edu in the Server Name text field
  • Type 587 instead of default 25 in the Port field
  • Click on Use name and password check box
  • Type username@math.berkeley.edu in the User Name text field
  • Click on TLS radio button (this is important security setting)
  • Click on OK button to close the SMTP Server dialog window

Selecting Outgoing Server for CalMail Math Account

  • Go back to CalMail Math account on the left side of the Account Settings dialog window
  • Select CalMail Math - calmail.berkeley.edu item from the drop-down list in the Outgoing Server (SMTP) field

Notes

  • The above steps were tested on Linux Thunderbird version 2.0.0.19. Other versions may have slightly different names of fields in respective dialog windows.
  • The above settings should work on both office and home computers, though home users may have a different outgoing SMTP server. Check with your Internet service provider how to set up the outgoing SMTP server.
  • As Thunderbird supports multiple email accounts, one may move messages (or even the whole folders/mailboxes) between the accounts using "drag-and-drop" operations. Beware: the current Math mail server does not handle well large messages. Please use command line tools described in Move mbox Calmail for large messages and/or mailboxes.
