Course Description: An introduction to differential and integral calculus of functions of one variable, with applications. This course is intended for majors in engineering and the physical sciences.
Prerequisites: 3.5 years of high school math, including trigonometry and analytic geometry, plus a satisfactory grade in one of the following: CEEB MAT test, an AP test, the UC/CSU math diagnostic test, or Math 32. There is an on-line exam you can take to help you decide if you are ready for this course.
Textbooks:
Homework: assigned each week but not collected or graded. You are strongly encouraged to keep up with the homework in order to be prepared for quizzes and exams. Click here for the homework assigned so far.
Grading:
weekly quizzes: | 15% (12 quizzes given, lowest two scores dropped) | |
midterm 1: | 20% | |
midterm 2: | 20% | |
final exam: | 45% |
You are guaranteed at least an A, B or C if your scores are over 90%, 80% or 70%, respectively, although these grade boundaries may be lowered if the exam scores warrant it.
Grade corrections: The grades for exams or quizzes will be changed only if there is a clear error on the part of the grader, such as adding up marks incorrectly. I will not increase grades just because someone needs a higher grade to graduate or get into some program.
Incomplete grades: Incomplete "I" grades are almost never given. The only justification is a documented serious medical problem or genuine personal/family emergency. Falling behind in this course or problems with workload in other courses are not acceptable reasons.
