Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad

February 23, 1999

Your school is invited to participate in the Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad (BAMO), to be held February 23, 1999. For detailed information about BAMO, please read the brochure on our webpage, http://www.gunn.palo-alto.ca.us/bamo/

This is a four-hour, five problem essay type examination, for Bay Area High School and Middle School students, to be held on Tuesday afternoon, February 23, 1999. About a week in advance we shall mail the examinations to participating schools. After the examination, the papers are to be returned to us for grading. Complete instructions for administration of the examination and handling the papers will be included in the mailing. On Sunday, March 7, 1999, there will be an awards ceremony held on the University of California campus in Berkeley, to which all participants are invited. At that time the winners in the various categories will be announced. We expect to give awards to first place and runners-up, and as many as 15 honorable mentions, in each of three categories: middle school, ninth and tenth grades, and eleventh and twelfth grades. In addition there will be team and school awards. We have allocated about $5000 in total for these awards.

We certainly hope that your school is interested in participating in this competition. If so, please return the response form. Please note that you are asked to commit to providing a room, the time, and a proctor for the examination. If that cannot be done, but you would like your students to take the examination, it may be possible for them to be hosted at a nearby school. If this is the case, please so indicate.
