BERKELEY MATH CIRCLE 1998-99

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Time and Place

  • The sessions of the Berkeley Math Circle (BMC) will be held on Sundays from 2pm till 4pm, Room 60, Evans Hall, UC Berkeley campus. Due to an expected conflict with the ARML training sessions, lectures in April and May may have to be rescheduled for a different time and/or day of the week. We shall start at 2pm sharp , so please plan on arriving 5 to 10 minutes earlier . Late arrivals are discouraged since they cause distraction to the sessions.

The first session will be held on September 13th 1998 at 2pm. It will contain a short introduction to the Math Circle and a brief discussion of some organizational issues, followed by our first lecture. Due to the introductory part, the first session may end later than 4pm, but certainly no later than 4:30pm.

  • What to bring

  • We strongly encourage students to take notes during the sessions, so notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers and pencil sharpeners are recommended. Rulers, compasses and protractors may be useful during some lectures. Scientific calculators may be helpful on occasion, but will never be necessary.

While security is normally not a problem on campus, UC Berkeley is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. We recommend that you bring as few valuables as possible and keep them with you at all times.

There are soda and snack machines at the southwest entrance of Evans Hall on the ground level. However, food and drinks cannot be brought under any circumstances into the classrooms and lecture halls.

  • Standards of conduct

  • While on campus, students are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly manner, and must not interfere with the study conditions of others while in the academic buildings. Thus, for instance, running, shouting or ball-playing in the classrooms and in the corridors is not permitted. Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside Evans Hall.

UC Berkeley Math Department has generously offered us to use its colloqium room in Evans Hall. We are expected to keep it clean and not to cause any damage to its furnishings or equipment. We expect students to be courteous of the rights and opinions of the other participants in the Circle, and to abide by all regulations imposed by the Math Circle staff.

  • Visitors

  • Parents, teachers and other interested persons are encouraged to come and observe the first session on Sept. 13, and they are invited to visit the Math Circle throughout the year. Since the sessions of the Circle will be directed exclusively towards working with the student participants, all visitors are expected to sit quietly and not to disturb the sessions in any fashion. Questions by visitors for the instructors or participants may be asked after sessions.
