Updates

Sat Aug 19 9:00pm: Whoops, one more post to correct a typo in the last one. The part in parentheses should be (it is fun, right?)

Sat Aug 19 8:59pm: Solutions to the final are now in the handouts section. I suggest you go over the problems you had trouble with. As I say in the solutions, just because the class is over does not mean the math fun (is it fun, right?) has to end! This will be my last update. Please feel free to stop by my office sometime to say hi, or for help with other math courses :) This is Santi, signing off.

Fri Aug 18 12:54pm: Okay, I lied in my last post. I will post solutions to the final -- not complete solutions to every problem (specifically the straightforward computation ones), but definitely for say #2, #3, and we'll see what else. And now, I'm off to watch the best movie ever!

Fri Aug 18 12:25pm: As I said in class, it was a pleasure having you all in class. Final grades will be entered sometime this weekend, and should be available to you sometime next week. If you're worried about your performance on the final, know that I was expecting it to be a little tough, and I will take that into consideration when deciding on a grading scale. I won't be able to post solutions, but please email me about specific questions you may have. Good luck to you all!

Tue Aug 15 7:00pm: Some info on the final: there will be 8 problems, 4 covering differential equations (only material since the second midterm), and 4 covering linear algebra (where anything is fair game). As a reminder, the final will be during regular class time -- from 10-12 in 6 Evans. Tomorrow we will finish solving the heat equation, and look at some other similar partial differential equations. Thursday will be review, and I'll have extra office hours Thursday from 2 until at least 4, but longer if people are still around. Happy studying!

Fri Aug 11 7:48pm: Solutions to the extra problems from chapters 7 and 10 are now up, and solutions to last summer's final are on the site from last summer. We are now entering the home stretch -- happy studying!

Wed Aug 9 1:27pm: Extra problems for chapters 7 and 10 of the differential equations book are now up, with solutions to come this weekend. Be sure to check out the final exam and practice final I gave last summer, both available on the site I used then (Links section), and previous review problems I've given other semesters.

Wed Aug 9 12:47pm: Just a reminder, you are not responsible for knowing how to draw phase portraits of systems with an undiagonalizable coefficient matrix, i.e. improper nodes (section 7.8). In the homework, just solve the systems, don't sketch the phase portraits or trajectories. Also, skip the material on Jordan forms in this section (although, you might want to skim through it if you plan on taking Math 110 at some point).

Mon Aug 7 1:51pm: Solutions to the second midterm are now in the Handouts section. They will be returned on Wednesday during section.

Sun Jul 30 1:29pm: Extra problems for chapters 3 and 4 of the differential equations book are now up. Be careful, chapter 4 will NOT be on the second midterm.

Sun Jul 30 12:48pm: Extra problems for chapter 5 are now in the Handouts section. (Better late than never!) Solutions, and solutions to the chapter 4 extra problems, will be up tonight.

Wed Jul 26 1:38pm: Solutions to quiz 6, quiz 7, hw 6, and hw 7 are now up. The third problem on quiz 6 was kind of tough -- any Gram-Schmidt problems on the midterm will be simpler.

Thu Jul 20 9:28pm: Extra problems for chapter 4 are now up, with solutions to follow sometime in the next two weeks (for sure before the second midterm). Just a reminder, these are not to be turned in -- they are simply to give you some extra practice. As always, these questions are in general a little more difficult than quizzes and exams will be, but they are still good to go through.

Wed Jul 19 5:24pm: Check your email for a message concerning a change in schedule, which I will mention in class on Thursday. The important to know for now is that this Friday's quiz (and homework) will be on Monday instead.

Fri Jul 14 12:34pm: Solutions to the first midterm are now up in the Handouts section. If you feel you didn't do so well, don't worry about it -- there is always room for improvement. One bad score won't bring you down! So, this weekend, go out, have fun, and forget about math for the time being ;)

Tue Jul 11 7:42pm: An updated version of the extra problems from Chapter 3 and solutions have been posted (the original had a typo in problem 7 -- in which you should actually show the polynomials are linearly dependent, not independent). Homeworks 2 and 3 will be returned tomorrow, and Homework 4 will be returned on Thursday.

Mon Jul 10 1:35pm: Some notes on differential equations are now up in the Handouts section.

Sat Jul 8 9:17pm: Solutions to the extra problems from chapter 3 are now up. Please be aware of the note at the beginning. Also, just as a reminder, the first midterm is this Friday -- I will say more about it on Monday. Check my old course websites for practice midterms and what not.

Thu Jul 6 10:01am: Solutions to the second homework and first set of extra problems are now up. The second set of extra problems is up as well, solutions will soon follow.

Tue Jul 4 10:30pm: Solutions to the first homework are now up. The grading for homeworks will be as follows: each homework I will choose four problems that will be graded carefully, each out of 2 points - these are the ones that I will post solutions for. The rest of the homework will be given 2 points if an attempt was made on the rest of the problems, so that in total the homework will be out of 10 points. Of course, I won't let you know beforehand which four problems will be graded ;) If you have questions about solutions to other problems, please ask during office hours or via email.

Mon Jul 3 2:31pm: I've posted the solutions to the first quiz, and will pass them back on Wednesday (which, if you recall, is when the fun begins). I'm still considering possible office hour changes so let me know if the current times don't work for you. Also, I'd love to know what you all thought about the first week. If you have comments, please let me know in person, via email, or through the website. Have a good fourth!

Tue Jun 27 2:13pm: I've posted the list of problems I handed out in class today in the Handouts section, including additional problems for the rest of first chapter. I'll do this for each chapter we cover. Solutions will be available hopefully towards the end of next week.

Fri Jun 23 3:32pm: Welcome to Math 54! Please feel free to give me any comments you may have about the course -- either in person, via email, or anonymously through the website. Hope everyone enjoys the course!
