Enrollment Questions

Questions of enrollment (waiting lists, changes of section, etc.) are being handled by the head GSI for Math 1B, Darren Rhea . His office hours for the first two weeks are: 12:20-2:20 Monday 4-6pm Tuesday 12:20-2:20 Wednesday 11:45-1:45 Thursday 2:20-4:20 Friday IN MOFFITT UNDERGRADUATE LIBRARY DOWNSTAIRS WITH THE WHITE TABLES. If they cannot find him, call him at (510) 301-4084. For changes in his schedule and results see his website.

Grading Policy

The grade for the course will be computed according to the following proportions: Sections vary by the number and by the quality of students. If some sections better average grades for quizzes this should not be surprising. Quizzes will have approximately the same difficulty level in all sections and grading policy will be uniform.
Do not take this course if you have a conflict in the final exam schedule (check the exam group number of your courses in the Schedule of Classes, Fall 2007). This course is in exam group 2. The final exam date and time: December 13, 12:30-15:30
Official University policy states that an incomplete can be given only for valid medical excuses with a doctor's certificate and only if, at the point the grade is given, the student has a passing grade (a C or better). If you are behind in the course, an incomplete is not an option!

Homework Assignments

Stewart, Calculus 5th Edition, UC Berkeley Edition, Brooks/Cole, 2003. You are requested to do the assigned reading before each lecture. Note that mathematical texts are not meant to be read like novels: very often you will come across passages that must be read many times before they make sense to you.
Never fall behind in this course, either in the reading assignments or in the homework assignments.
Problem sets get rather heavy at times. This is intentional. Sometimes there is simply no substitute for repetitive drills. Problem (and reading) assignments are subject to change.
The Mathematics department is unable to hire graders for problem sets. However, problem sets will be assigned and collected on Tuesdays. Answer sheets will be available here online every Wednseday.
