Announcements
+
There
will be neither section nor office hours this Wednesday, November 25th. However, Homework #11
is still due by 5 p.m. that day.
Please hand it in to my mailbox in the mailroom on the 9th floor
of Evans. Have a happy
Thanksgiving!
+
For
the week of November
16th, various things will be happening differently than usual.
The schedule is as follows: on Monday, Homework #9 is due, and we will be having Quiz #10 (both
on sections 6.4-7.4);
furthermore, I will be holding my office hours for the week that day at 9-10,
and 1-2. On Wednesday, Homework #10 is
due, and we will be having Quiz #11 (both on sections 7.5-8.4); I will not be holding office hours
that day.
+
Midterm
#2 is
this coming Thursday,
November 5th, in class.
Please see the course webpage for more details. In particular, note that the material
covered on the test will be everything up to and including section 6.3 in the
textbook, and nothing more.
+
Another
thing to note from the webpage is that Homework #9 is due the Monday, November 9th, by 5:00 p.m, which is the Monday following the midterm. That is, you do not have to hand it in
before the test on Wednesday, or after the test on Friday, as you may have
heard. See most recent note (due date changed)
+
In
addition, I will be holding extra Office Hours this week before Midterm #2: my office hours for the
week of November 2nd are the following four hours on Wednesday:
9-11, 1-2 and 3-4. As always, these
will be held in my office 741 Evans.
+
Quiz
#5 will
be in section (as usual) next Monday, October 5th. It will cover the first half of
section 3.7 from the textbook; that is everything up to, but not including, the
cryptography part. So it
will include, for example, Fermats Little Theorem and Chinese
Remainder Theorem. I suggest
doing all the homework problems he assigned from 3.7 in order to study for this
(even though they are due two days later).
+
The
following week on Monday, October 12th, Quiz #6 will be in section, and there
will be nothing else. I am
having my wisdom teeth removed the Friday previous to this (October 9th),
so I will likely be in no shape to talk to you about math. If you are in my 8-9 section
the quiz will be handed out promptly at 8:40am; if you are in my 2-3 section the quiz will be handed out
promptly at 2:10pm;
in either case, you will have 20 minutes to complete the quiz. The material covered on Quiz #6
will be the rest of section 3.7 (the cryptography material), as well as
sections 4.1 and 4.2 (see Homework #5).
+
Homework
#4 is due
by 5 p.m. (as usual) this Wednesday, September 30th.
+
There
is a Quiz
(#4) in section Monday, September 28th, in section, and on the material
in 3.5
and 3.6 (Homework #4). Your next Homework (#4) is due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday,
September 30th.
+
The
Midterm #1
is this coming Tuesday,
September 22nd, in class.
Please see the course webpage for more details.
+
I
will be holding different and extra Office Hours next week: my office hours for the
week of September
21st are the following four hours on Monday: 9-11, 1-2 and 3-4. As always, these will be held in my
office 741 Evans.
+
There
will be
a Quiz this
coming Monday,
September 21st, the day before the midterm: it will cover the
material from Homework
#3.
+
There will be a Quiz this Monday, August 31st. It will be on the first homework, which is due
this Wednesday, Sept. 2nd.
This, in general is not how quizzes will work; normally, quizzes will be on the
homework from the previous week.
Quizzes and Homework
+
There will be a Quiz every
week in section on Mondays.
+ Homework is due on Wednesdays. If you cannot hand in the homework in section, you
have to get it to me by 5 p.m. on Wednesdays (not 5:10...). You can do this by a) putting it in my mailbox in the
mailroom on the 9th floor of Evans Hall (across from the North
elevators, which are not the main elevators); or b) sliding it under my office door. I will be coming around to my office
and checking my mailbox just after 5 p.m. to collect homework - if I do not get
it then, then it is late, and does not count! Make sure to put your name, section and my name on
your homework.
+ After quizzes, I will post the quiz and the solutions below (the
grades include scores of 0/10 on homework and quizzes for those people who
don’t write the quiz, or don’t hand the homework in on time or at all).
