Lots of Old Math 1b Exams
Moffitt Library's online repository of old math 1b midterms and finals
Mock final exam
If you'd like, practice on
one of the old final exams (give yourself three hours), and turn it in to me or slide it
under the office door. I'll grade it and give it back.
Additional Study Materials
Practice integrals, a bit harder than the homework
Additional study materials will be passed out in section. (Stop by office hours if you miss a handout and want to pick up a copy.)
Quiz Solutions
Quiz 1 with solutions
Quiz 2 with solutions
Quiz 8.5 (take home not graded) solutions
Quiz 3,4,5,... solutions will be hand-written and
available outside my office door for about a week after
the quiz. (Feel free to stop by office hours and ask for earlier solutions as well.)
Challenge Problems
If you are the first one to completely and rigorously solve a challenge problem and come to my office hours to present
your solution on the black board,
this could have a small positive effect on your section grade.
I'll accept up to two problems from each student over the semester,
and if all problems get solved then I'll whip up some more.
(I'll also accept multiple solutions to a problem if they are fundamentally
different than the ones that have already been presented)
Volume 1: Some problems on material from chapters 7 and 11 (pdf format)
Volume 2: More chapter 11 problems (pdf format)
Challenge problems that have been already solved:
- Volume 1 problem 1
- Volume 1 problem 2a, solved by int by parts. (b,c still open)
- Volume 2 problem 1, solved by 3-way telescoping series.
- Volume 2 problem 2
Tutoring Resources
- The Student Learning Center offers free tutoring in many classes including Math 1b. If they are busy you may get tutored in small groups. SLC tutors get paid $10-$15 an hour, which is less than what most private tutors charge.
- The Berkeley Math Department Tutor List offers a list of math grad students and graduated PhD's who offer private math tutoring. I believe private tutors charge anywhere from $15 to $30 an hour, and some may offer discounted group rates. I'd recommend asking around about which tutor would be best for your 1b needs, and maybe asking a potential tutor if you can talk to a couple past tutees of theirs.
Homework
- You may turn in homework 2 days early on Monday, and get it back on Wednesday so that you can study for the quiz.
- Per Prof. Tataru's main class webpage, no late homework is accepted after the end of section.
- Homework will be collected every Wednesday, unless there's a midterm (in which case homework is collected 2 days later on Friday).
- Collected homework will consist of the problems assigned during the previous week. So you have 6-8 days to work on the problems.
- Your overall homework grade will be the average of your best 9 assignments. (Note however, one 'assignment' might combine homeworks from two weeks if there is a holiday or midterm.) I think 3 scores will be dropped.
Quizzes
- Per Prof. Tataru's main class webpage, there will be no make-up quizzes.
- Quizzes are graded on a non-linear curve.
- Quizzes will be held at the end of every Friday section. Some weeks there may not be quizzes in case of holidays or midterms.
- About half of each quiz will come directly from the homework so it is much to your advantage to understand every single homework problem.
- Your overall quiz grade will be the average of your best 9 quizzes. I believe 2 scores will be dropped.
There's always something to believe in; if there weren't, then I could believe in that.
