The Noetherian Ring

Named in honor of Emmy Noether, the Noetherian Ring is an organization of graduate students, postdocs, and professors in the Mathematics Department at the University of California at Berkeley who happen to be women.

During the academic year, we have weekly teatime get-togethers, which provide a forum for the members to mentor and provide support to each other. We are also planning to run other, coed events. If you are interested in being placed on our mailing list and receiving announcements of upcoming events, please send an e-mail to nring@math.berkeley.edu.

Upcoming Events

Qual Workshop

We'll be hosting a qual workshop for all math grad students on Monday, February 12 at 3:00 p.m. in 891 Evans. We'll be talking about all sorts of issues related to taking a qual, like finding an advisor, choosing a committee, study techniques, and, of course, actually taking the qual. If you're thinking of taking your qual soon, this is for you. If you've taken your qual already, you're more than welcome to come and share your wisdom.

More About NRing

You can read more about the Noetherian Ring in our department's 1997 newsletter and 1996 newsletter . There is also a series of quotations from past presidents offering a historical perspective of the Noetherian Ring.

As a group of predominantly female mathematicians, the Noetherian Ring at Berkeley is far from unique. Following a presentation by members of the Berkeley Noetherian Ring at the 1995 AWM Workshop during the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Francisco, women at MIT were motivated to form the MIT Noetherian Ring. There is also a Noetherian Ring at the University of Florida, a Noetherian Ring at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), Women in Mathematics at the University of Maryland College Park, and Women in Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania.
