The lecture of Thursday Nov 18 is the last one from chapter 6. It introduces two NEW and VERY important concepts both for the theory as well as the applications of LINEAR ALGEBRA: the singular value decomposition and the pseudo-inverse of a matrix.
In a very concrete fashion it wraps up everything we have been doing from the beginning of the semester and it offers a panoramic view of at least 80% of the material that will appear in the FINAL. I strongly encourage everyone to attend.
In answer to a frequent question: least squares approximation will appear in the FINAL, but not in this coming midterm.
Good luck in the midterm, this Tuesday Nov 16th.

Grading policy
A clarification on the grading policy for the midterms:
I originally planned to give 20% to each of the two midterms. This has been revised as follows: if you do BOTH midterms then you get 10% for the worst one and 30% for the best one. If you do not take the second one then the rules are the usual ones: the first one is worth 20% and the final which was supposed to have a weight of 35% ( check in the course announcement in the math dept website) is now worth 55%.
As a final reminder: the second midterm is on this coming TUESDAY, Nov 16th.

Review session for midterm 2

There will be a quiz during the first 40 minutes of the review session. It consists of true/false questions covering concepts that will appear on the midterm. It will hopefully help you evaluate your current knowledge of the material and indicate areas where you need to study more.
