Review material for midterm 2, recommended by Luiza

KEY CONCEPTS:

chapter 4:

determinants, ways to compute them (cofactors, expansions along rows/columns), properties (two identical rows imply determinant 0, det(AB) = det(A)det(B), etc. )

chapter 5:

eigenvalues/eigenvectors, theorems about diagonalizablility, characteristic polynomials, multiplicity of an eigenvalue;
direct sums;
transition matrices, probablity vectors, regular/nonregular matrices, boundaries on eigenvalues (Gerschgorin's disk theorem);
invariant subspaces, cyclic subspaces, Cayley-Hamilton theorem,

chapter 6:

inner products, orthogonality, Gram-Schmidt process, orthogonal complements, orthogonal projections,
adjoint of a linear operator, least squares, normal and self-adjoint operators

PRACTICE PROBLEMS:

Main practice problems are homework problems and topics discussed in the lectures.
To prepare for the midterm and improve your understanding of the class material, I would personally recommend to organize a small study group, where you could together explain each other definitions, theorems, solutions to the problems.

Just reading through the book/lecture notes without solving problems and/or discussing definitions/theorems with your study partners may be deceptive -- one feels that the material is clear, but then on the midterm doesn't know where to start.
