Schedule

        This summer session has 5´8-1=39 days. Among them, 33 days are for lectures and discussions, 3 days are for the review and 3 days are for the exams. The first 24 lectures are for the linear algebra, while the other 9 lectures are for the differential equations. The contents of each lecture are listed in the syllabus below.
       
In the lecture, we will learn definitions, formulas and theorems and see some examples. A discussion section follows each lecture on the next day. In the discussion section, we will practice theorems and formulas by solving typical problems.
        There is a worksheet for each lecture, where includes key points, reading suggestions, 5 discussion problems, 5 homework problems and 5 additional problems. The worksheets will be distributed in class and can be also downloaded below. 
       
Three consecutive lectures form a unit, each unit contains
5´3=15 homework problems that are due two working days after the last lecture in the unit. The corresponding quiz is scheduled on the day after the homework due date.

Grading Policy

    Your final score will be computed in the following way.
   
Score 1= Homework 10% + Quizzes 15% + Midterm 1 20% + Midterm 2 25% + Final 30%,
   
Score 2= Midterm 1 25% + Midterm 2 30% + Final Exam 45%,
   
Final Score= Max( Score 1, Score 2 ).
The letter grade will be determined based on your rank according to the final score and the overall performance of the whole class. Go bears for an A in this course!

Homework
        Homework must be done individually, although group discussion is allowed. The exact due time of the homework is 12PM of the due date. You can either turn in the homework in class or put it in my mailbox (with label J.YAO) in 940 Evans. NO late homework will be accepted since the solution will be posted online right after the due time. The lowest TWO homework scores will be dropped. Exams
        There are two midterms and a final exam. Each exam will be held from 8:10am to 10:00am. The first midterm covers lecture 1 to 12, the second midterm covers lecture 13 to 24. Each midterm contains 12 problems that come from 12 lectures, among which 4 problems are exactly from discussion or homework, 4 problems are similar to discussion and homework problems, and 4 problems are challenging. The final exam is comprehensive, which contains 9 linear algebra problems, 9 differential equation problems. Again the 9 differential equations problems correspond to 9 lectures, 3 are old, 3 are nearly old and 3 are new.
       
An absence of any above exams will result in 0 point for that part UNLESS medical or personal emergencies. In that case, you need INFORM the instructor as soon as possible AND PROVIDE a necessary proof within one week after the exam. A redistribution of the score weights can be negotiated afterward if this policy is obeyed.
