Math 55 - Spring 2005
Discussion Sections 102 and 103
This is the Announcement Page for Discussion Sections 102 and 103 of Math 55.
It is not a pretty web-page, but you may find it very informative as the semester progresses.
At the official course webpage, you can find lots of information about the syllabus, the grading policy, Prof. Christ's office hours, etc.
Announcements
I hold office hours every week (starting Jan. 18) on Tuesdays from 12 to 1:30 and on Thursdays from 10 to 11. My office is 741 Evans Hall, which is right near the back (north) elevators on the seventh floor. Please stop by to introduce yourself, to ask questions about the lecture material or homework assignments.

There will be a discussion section on Tuesday, Jan. 18. We will discuss pseudocode and go over some examples. This materal won't be covered in lecture, and it's only covered briefly in the textbook, but Prof. Christ will use it in lecture a lot (especially when we cover chapter 2) and there will be homework (for example Problem Set 1) and exam questions that ask you to use it. So Tuesday's discussion section will be quite important.

Prof. Christ maintains a very complete course web-page that you should check from time to time.

The first problem set has already been posted. As Prof. Christ has warned, it is quite long, so please start early.

The Head GSI for Math 55 is Tom Dorsey.
He is responsible for all section changes and waitlists.
His office is 1097 Evans Hall, and he will have lots of office hours (TBA) in the first few weeks of class.
Please see Tom if you need to switch sections, if your are waitlisted and would like to enroll, and for other enrollment issues.

As promised, here is the text of the pseudocode that we talked about in section today (Thurs. Jan. 20).

Here are some review questions for midterm 1 that you might find helpful. I will not be posting solutions, but we can discuss them in class on Tuesday or in my office hours if you like.

I made two mistakes in class today (Thursday Feb, 17):
(1)the results summary for the exam grades should have read:
90%-ile was scores of >80
75%-ile was scores of >75
median was 69
25%-ile was 60
(2) problem set 4B is due Tuesday (not Thursday!) next week.
Here are the review questions we worked on on Monday and Tuesday before the second midterm. Link

Thinking about starting your reviewing for the final exam? Why not check out the web page of a related course: CS70. On that web page, there are assignments quizzes and exams with solutions. The material they cover is very similar to some of the material in our class - namely, they cover logic, algorithms, counting and probability.
Here are some more review problems. I am happy to discuss your solutions to these prolems in the review session or in my office hours this week.
My additional office hours this week are Thursday 9-12 and Friday 10-1. I am holding a review session on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 in 110 Barrows Hall.
