| Prerequisites: |
The Berkeley course catalog says "Math 54 or equivalent linear algebra".
Here's what I think this means. It may help you to know some things from Math 55, but we'll cover these things in class if we need them. It may help you if you've taken Math 74, or 104 or 110, since these courses "develop mathematical mautrity", but hopefully we'll develop some of that in this class too! If you have any questions about the prerequisites, or about your preparation to take this class, please email me, and I'll be happy to talk with you. |

Required Text: |
I.N. Herstein, "Abstract Algebra", 3rd Edition. Amazon Link. There's a copy of the book on 2hr reserve in Moffit Library, and I encourage you to have a look at it and try some of the problems on pages 6,7,13,14,15, if you are worried about your preparation for the class. |

|
Recommended Reading: |
The other section of this class is using Beachy & Blair: Abstract Algebra. My favorite resource for this material is the book by Dummit and Foote. And there are lots of other introductory texts, some of which I'll mention in class. |
|   | |
|
Syllabus: |
We'll cover most of the material in Herstein's "Abstract Algebra". Our timetable will be approximately: First 90 pages in the first two weeks; Pages 90-170 in weeks 3-5; Pages 170 ff. in the last three weeks. I'll let you know which material you should read before each class, as we figure out what is the best pace. |

Grading: |
There will be homework. There will also be two midterms and a final exam (all during class). In particular, the Final Exam will be on Thursday, Aug. 16, 12-2 pm in 6 Evans Hall. If you cannot take the final exam at this time, you are not allowed to enrol in this class. |
|   | |
|
Homework: |
Yes. At least weekly. There will also be classwork. |

Comments: |
Math 113 is an upper-division math class. It also has the word "abstract" in the course title. I'm not really sure what these two things mean, and I'm not sure they're connected, but I feel like they're important. |
