Math 110: Exams

Midterm 1 : Monday March 3

Policies for the midterm are:

• Material covered The exam will cover sections 1.1-1.6, 2.1-2.5, and the computational techniques of sections 3.2 and 3.4.
• Closed book No books, notes, calculators, laptops, cell phones, or BlackBerries may be used during the exam.

Here are two sample midterms from when Kenneth Ribet taught the course in 2002 and 2005: Sample 1, Sample 2. I think both exams cover chapters 1-2, though Ribet also covered section 2.6. You should also take a look at my practice questions.

Midterm 2 : Monday April 14

Policies for the midterm are:

• BRING BLUE BOOKS! I think this will make it easier for both of us. You can get blue books right in the Engineering Terrace Cafe, I believe.
• Material covered The exam cover all of chapter 4 and sections 5.1,5.2, and 5.4 of chapter 5. Strictly speaking, however, the exam will be cumulative in the sense that we draw continuously from the material in chapters 1-3.
• Closed book No books, notes, calculators, laptops, cell phones, or BlackBerries may be used during the exam.

Once again, the two sample midterms from when Kenneth Ribet taught the course in 2002 and 2005 are nice examples: Sample 1, Sample 2. You will find the first especially useful, as it seems also to focus on chapters 4 and 5. You can ignore the last problem as it deals with dual spaces: a topic we skipped. Lastly, I wrote up a nice little review of the important topics in chapters 4 and 5. It is in your interest to give it a close read, especially my additional comments about the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem at the end.

Policies for the final are:

• BRING BLUE BOOKS! I think this will make it easier for both of us. You can get blue books right in the Engineering Terrace Cafe, I believe.
• Material covered The exam will focus on sections 6.1-6.6 and 7.1-7.2. Regarding chapter 7, besides understanding the main results, you must know how to compute a Jordan form and Jordan basis for a given linear transformation. As always, the exam will be cumulative in the sense that we draw continuously from the material covered earlier in the course.
• Closed book No books, notes, calculators, laptops, cell phones, or BlackBerries may be used during the exam.
