The solution to this problem is surprising in many ways. Black's king, so penned up on the side of the board, is allowed out of its cage just before it can stalemate itself. The result is a beautiful pure mate, delivered by an unlikely piece:
1 g8(N)! b5 2 Ne7! Kxb4 3 Nc6 mate.
