MA110 Announcements and Assignments

Practice Final Exam questions - Note that the practice problems are more "open-ended" than you will encounter on the actual test.

7/31 - Second exam, worth 25% (or 30% if you choose the revised grading option), covering through chapter 6.

8/1 - Start self adjoint and normal operators, with the goal of proving the complex and real versions of the spectral theorem.

8/2 - Finish the spectral theorem(s). Hand back exams. "Proof" of the fundamental theorem of algebra, for your amusement only.

HW9 due Friday by 1pm in my mailbox: chapter 7 - #1, 2, 6, 8, 16

8/6 - Generalized eigenvectors, successive powers of operators. Structure of the diagonal of M(T) in terms of the dimensions of the generalized eigenspaces.

8/7 - Finish structure theorems for operators with upper triangular matrix representations. Characteristic and minimal polynomials; Jordan form of an operator.

HW10 due: chapter 8 - #1, 2, 4

8/8 - Continue with Jordan form, and finish chapter 8. Compute some examples. (We'll only briefly touch on chapter 9.)

8/9 - Compute more examples from the ends of chapters 8 and 9, minimal and characteristic polynomials.

HW11 due Friday by 1pm, chapter 8 - #7, 10, 11, 16, 17, 24. You should also work the "Give an example..." problems for yourself, because these will be typical of questions on the exam.

8/13 - Trace and change of basis.

8/14 - Finish trace, begin review for exam.

8/15 - HW12 due: ch. 5 - #17, 19... ch. 6 - #13, 31... ch. 7 - #4, 16... ch. 8 #27... ch. 10 #13, 14, 15, 18. Only the last five problems will be graded for accuracy, the rest for completion only.

Continue review for the exam.

8/16 - Final exam. The format will be very similar to the second exam, with an emphasis on examples. I will post a practice final.
