MINOR IN MATHEMATICS (consists of four lower-division and five upper-division courses)
LOWER-DIVISION REQUIRED COURSES
| Mathematics 1A | Calculus |
| Mathematics 1B | Calculus |
| Mathematics 53 | Multivariable Calculus |
| Mathematics 54 | Linear Algebra and Differential Equations |
UPPER-DIVISION REQUIRED COURSES
| Mathematics 104 | Introduction to Analysis |
| Mathematics 110 | Linear Algebra |
| Mathematics 113 | Introduction to Abstract Algebra |
| Mathematics 185 | Introduction to Complex Analysis |
| Mathematics ___ | Elective |
ONE ELECTIVE
Students select one additional upper-division mathematics course. All the courses applied to the minor must be taken for a letter grade, and passed with a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Only one upper-division class may overlap your major and the Mathematics Minor. At least three of the five upper division courses must be completed at U. C. Berkeley.
How to Declare the Minor
- Be a declared major in a program other than Mathematics
- Be a student in good standing (minimum 2.0 overall gpa at U.C.)
- Completed Math 1A, 1B, 53, 54 or equivalency (B- or better recommended)
- Complete at least one upper-division math class (C or better recommended)
A completed application will contain: Application to the Minor in Mathematics (yellow) and copies of Transcripts showing courses used for the minor whether from UCB or other colleges/universities. (Bear Facts printout, photo copies, unofficial copies acceptable).
When to Apply to the Minor
Students should turn in the completed application and copies of their transcripts to the Undergraduate Advisor in 965 Evans. Applications are accepted year-round.
Completion/Confirmation of Minor
Once enrolled in the final course/courses to complete the Mathematics Minor, fill out a Petition for Confirmation of Minor Program (white) available from 970 Evans or the College of Letters and Science. Turn in the completed petition to the Undergraduate Advisor in 965 Evans. When final grades are available, she will certify completion of the Mathematics Minor to the Registrar’s Office. The notation will appear on your transcript even if you have not yet completed your degree.
General Information
Math 74: Transition to Upper Division Mathematics
One recommended course for prospective majors/minors is Math 74 Transition to Upper Division Mathematics. To bridge the gap between lower- and upper-division math courses, Math 74 provides an opportunity for students to learn how to write clear and concise proofs. Math 74 may be taken on a P/NP basis and scheduled with Math 53 or 54.
First Upper-Division Math Courses
It should be emphasized that the character of mathematics changes sharply between lower and upper-division courses. The role of computation diminishes and there is a greater emphasis on deductive reasoning. While some students find the theoretical approach more congenial, most find upper-division courses more difficult. Because of this, it is strongly recommended that only students who earned grades of B- or better in both Math 53 and 54 petition apply to the major programs in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.
Additionally, the advising staff recommend Mathematics 110 or 113 as your first upper-division class. Students are more successful in making the transition with these courses. Math 104 is a particularly demanding class and should be taken later in your program. Be aware that top students spend 12 to 15 hours per class beyond the lectures and sections, so plan your study load accordingly.
