Preliminary Examinations

General Information

Ph.D. students in the Berkeley mathematics department are required to pass this examination within the first three semesters.

All the examinations are written by a committee of Berkeley professors. The files up to Spring 2001 were compiled and edited by Paulo Ney de Souza and Jorge-Nuno Silva.

The Fall 2008 Preliminary Examination

It will be held Monday, August 18, and Tuesday, August 19, 2008, from 9 am to 12 noon each day, in 60 Evans Hall. Please sign up for the exam in 910 Evans Hall. Solutions will be posted under "Exams" above soon after the exam is over.

Dear Graduate Students:

The following students have passed the Fall 2008 prelim: 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27. The following students did not pass: 1, 2, 3, 5, 17, 19, 30.

The score required for passing was 80 out of a maximum possible of 120. You may view a copy of your exam in 910 Evans. If you feel that an error in grading or totalling was made, AND if the point difference would be sufficient to change the outcome or a substantial mathematical point is involved, then you may file an appeal in 910 Evans, no later than Friday, August 29, 2007.

A note especially for those taking the exam for the first time: The math department admits into the Ph.D. program only students who it believes are capable of completing a Ph.D. here. The purpose of the prelim is not to reduce the number of students in the Ph.D. program. Instead it is to ensure that all students learn foundational material solidly, early on during the program here, regardless of their differing incoming backgrounds.
