Tutor Referral List

Tutor Referral List - Fall 2009

Below is a list of mathematics students and others interested in tutoring mathematics at all levels, from elementary school through university undergraduate and graduate courses. These tutors have not been recruited by the Math Department. Fees are arranged between tutor and tutee. Aside from this list, a good way to find a tutor is often through the "grapevine," asking a graduate student who has been here for a few years whether he or she knows of anyone who is likely to be good and willing to tutor. Feel free to contact one or more of the people listed below for assistance. Please note that the Math Department does not endorse any of the tutors on this list.

In addition to these individual tutors, some groups on campus that provide tutoring, mostly in lower-division courses, are the Student Learning Center, the Student Honors Society Chi Epsilon, the Engineering Honors Society, Tau Beta Pi, and Academic Services.

Students who are having trouble with study habits, with conflicts between academic and personal life, etc. might see the Student Learning Center's Study Strategies Resources group. Note that their web page has a place to click for "Individual Appointments".

If you wish to be included on the tutor list below, please see the staff in 970 Evans.

Special tutoring for UC Berkeley Mathematics Graduate Students

There is a limited amount of money available through the Mathematics Opportunity Committee to support the tutoring of students in the graduate program of the Department of Mathematics who have gaps in their preparation, and need help with any of their courses. Such students should contact Thomas Scanlon (scanlon@math.berkeley.edu, office 723 Evans, phone 642-3665), who will try to find a tutor if the student has not been able to do so, and will arrange to have the tutoring paid for. All other students who want to get math tutoring should see the information and tutor-chart earlier on this page.

Students who would be interested in tutoring such graduate students should also leave their names with Prof. Scanlon. (Those interested in tutoring students other than this particular group should see the staff in 970 Evans, as noted earlier.) Note, however, that an international student having 50% employment by the University -- in particular, an international student who is a full time GSI -- cannot be hired in this way, due to visa restrictions.

The student should discuss with Prof. Scanlon the number of hours per week and the number of weeks over which the tutoring is to continue, so that the tutor can be hired for the indicated time. The tutor will be paid at a rate of $11.20/hour if tutoring one person, $13.70/hour if tutoring more than one.
