Honors Courses
The Mathematics Department teaches Honors sections of Mathematics 53, 54, 104, 110, 113 and 185 (denoted H53, ..., H185). These are for students with strong mathematical ability and interests, who wish to see a deeper and more rigorous development of the material, and be challenged by difficult problems. In general, one honors section of each of Math H53, H104 and H110 is offered in the Fall Semester, and one of each of H54, H113 and H185 in the Spring (but check the Schedule of Classes to be sure). An honors version of Math 1B is shown in the Catalog, but due to budgetary constraints has not been given in recent years.

Honors courses satisfy the same course requirements as their non-honors equivalents.

Depending on your background and abilities, and on decisions made by the instructor as to what to include in the course, an honors course may be far more work for you than the corresponding non-honors course. If you are unsure of whether to take such a course, you might (a) meet with the instructor at or before the start of the Semester and discuss your background and the instructor's plans for the course, and (b) sit in on the first few days of the course, do the initial homework assignments, and see how successful you are with them.

Most of our Upper Division honors courses now restrict enrollment to students who either have a GPA of at least 3.5 in previous math courses, or have obtained consent of the instructor. To pre-enroll for such a course, you must put your name on the online waiting list, and you will be moved in to the course when your eligibility (either your GPA or a note from the instructor that he or she wishes to let you in) is checked.
